Quietude & Stillness

But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content

The Quiet was a place I avoided. Feared, even.
It was lonely there.

Just me and my thoughts…and memories…and regrets.
They weren’t good company.

But it’s in the Quiet where you hear His gentle Whisper.
His invitation to come close.

And in His nearness Lonely, and Regret, and Fear lose their voices.

In that quiet place with Him, there is Peace, and Rest, and Wholeness.
Certainly, much better companions.

Welcome the Quiet.
Welcome His Presence.
Welcome Him.

Spiritual Silence | Beneath The Fig Tree

For most of my life, I had a habit of keeping the TV or radio. Not because there was anything on worth watching, but because I “needed” the noise to keep me company. Silence created a void I desperately wanted to fill. I’d commit my time and energy to anything and everything, never saying “no,” just to avoid the unsettling hush that would creep into my surroundings.

The mere thought of sitting in stillness, with no external noise or distraction, made me uncomfortable. Unbeknownst to me, I was drowning out my own thoughts with the cacophony of life.

The year I turned 45, God opened a door for Brandon and me to be park hosts at our favorite state park. During our first six months here, I learned to slow down and embrace stillness. My personal favorite is being in my kayak or lounging in my hammock beneath the canopy of trees, surrounded by the birds’ harmonious songs and the beauty of life unfolding around me.

Little did I know, in the very stillness I once feared, God had a profound lesson to teach me—a lesson about love, tranquility, and the divine whispers that only silence can reveal.

Now, in those moments when my heart is at its most peaceful, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the gift of stillness. It may seem trivial at times, but I wouldn’t change a single moment of it.

God Speaks in the Stillness | Beneath The Fig Tree

There is so much “noise” begging for our attention and sometimes, we create the noise ourselves. But there exists a sacred space — the Quiet. The Quiet, when embraced, can be a powerful conduit for hearing God’s voice and for stilling our souls. It’s in moments of solitude and stillness that we can experience His presence and peace in profound ways

If you find yourself in a rhythm of constant noise, even if you seek it out yourself, may I invite you into a time of reflection?

Cultivating Your Soul

  1. Do you find yourself avoiding silence or are you simply in a noisy season?
  2. Is it possible you chase the noise out of fear?
  3. What is the noise that rolls around in your mind when you happen upon moments of solitude?

Take a few moments to get still and ask Holy Spirit to reveal anything inner noise He’d to bring peace to?

Whatever comes to mind, let it come without condemnation or shame. Simply thank Him for showing it to you and invite Him to bring His peace and rest and wholeness.

Listening Prayers: Quiet the Soul and Learn to Hear God

Unlike other forms of prayer where we might be more focused on sharing our requests or even worshipping God – both of which He invites us to do– in Listening Prayers we pause in quiet stillness, creating space for God to speak into our hearts. This is a time for intentional listening, where we set aside our words and let God lead the conversation.
